Why Trust Forbes Vetted

Here at Forbes Vetted, we spend as much time awake and thinking about sleep as we do actually sleeping. We’ve delved into everything sleep, from the best mattresses to outstanding sunrise alarm clocks. I, Jamie Ueda (author of this story), have ample experience with sleep, fabrics and materials, in particular. I used my educational knowledge, from degrees in textile design and mechanical engineering, and work experience, from working in product development and quality assurance at a home textiles company as well as at Nike, to pull together this list and see which cooling claims held solid. Sleep and mattress editor McKenzie Dillon also included her expert insights for cooling pillows she’s personally tested.

How We Chose The Best Cooling Pillows

When choosing the products on this list I sorted through dozens of cooling pillows online. I looked at popular cooling pillows and options from well-known brands, but I also scoured sites like Amazon that conglomerate other retailers. I heavily relied on my knowledge from testing dozens of bedding items, including pillows, as well as my educational and professional textile background to sort the legitimate cooling claims and materials from ones that weren’t rock solid.

The pillows that made the final cut are highly rated and well reviewed by customers like you. In addition, I’ve personally tried a number of the products and brands featured on this list. I selected brands that I’ve found reliable in my time testing hundreds of apparel and textile products over a number of years.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cooling Pillow

There are lots of considerations at play when you’re choosing a regular pillow, let alone a cooling option. From the feature that provides cooling to the material, we’ve run through some things you should keep in mind.

Cooling Features

Cooling pillows may be infused with different cooling technologies such as Outlast or 37.5. Some brands have proprietary cooling technologies, too. Typically, these technologies rely on a material that’s infused into the fabric or fill of a pillow. The infused material actively draws heat away from the body, and sometimes traps it, holding onto it until you’re cooler. Think of this like a wax that softens when it’s warm, and firms back up one it’s cool again. Other cooling features include gel pads, perforations in foam pillows to help airflow and disperse heat and fabrics that are breathable and wick moisture.

Fill Material

There are a number of different fill materials that manufacturers rely on:

Solid Foam: Cooling pillows made of foam may be one solid piece or shredded foam inside a cover. Foam is known to sleep hot, so hot sleepers should consider pillows with cooling gel, or other cooling materials infused into the foam. With foam options, it’s also important to check for cooling features in the cover, as that’s really your first line of defense. Shredded Foam: Pillows filled with shredded foam are often adjustable, making them suitable for most sleepers and different preferences. Foam that is one piece may offer more support since it can be molded into different solid shapes, such as contour pillows. Since it’s one piece, it doesn’t shift shapes throughout the night. However, they may not work for everyone since some can feel too dense for some, and may be too high for stomach sleepers. Fiberfill. Fiberfill pillows feel more plush than foam and don’t retain as much heat, so if you find cooling foam pillows still too hot you may want to consider this type. However, they don’t contour to your head like memory foam options.

Caring For Your Pillow

Cooling pillows have various levels of washability, with some that are entirely machine washable (as in you can throw the whole pillow in the laundry) and others just a portion is machine washable, like the outer cover. It helps to have a machine washable pillow as washing can reduce allergen and dirt build up. At a minimum, look for a pillow where at least the outer cover is washable. Using a pillow protector can also help provide another layer of defense against dirt, drool and more. Be sure to check the care instructions since every pillow is different in how it can be washed.

More Ways To Sleep Cool

Managing your sleep temperature isn’t limited to a great cooling pillow. Here are other ways to stay cool and comfortable all night long.

Consider Cooling Sheets

Linens sheets that don’t trap heat can make a huge difference in your sleep quality. Look for breathable, temperature-neutral fabrics, like cotton, linen and those derived from bamboo or eucalyptus. Brooklinen’s classic percale sheets are a top pick, thanks to their lightweight, airy feel.

Invest In A Cooling Mattress

Cooling mattresses are designed to regulate temperature with constructions that promote airflow and materials that won’t trap body heat. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, our pick for the best cooling mattress overall, is a luxurious hybrid made with fibers that actively draw heat away and a choice of firmness.

Check Out Other Cooling Products

From mattress toppers and sleep pads to fans and blackout curtains, there are a variety of accessories designed to minimize overheating at night. Check out our picks of the best products for hot sleepers.

What Material Is Best For A Cooling Pillow?

Down-alternatives and gel-infused foams tend to be good options, because they won’t retain body heat. Look for breathable, temperature-neutral cover materials as well, such as cotton and those derived from bamboo and eucalyptus.

Is There A Cooling Pillow That Actually Works?

According to reviewers, the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Breeze really does stay cool through the night. The GhostPillow is another great option for cooler nights, thanks to its aerated foam, cool-to-the-touch cover and phase-change technology that responds to your changing body temperature.

How Can I Stay Cool While Sleeping?

If overheating at night is an ongoing issue, don’t limit yourself to a cooling pillow. Consider bedding for hot sleepers like lightweight sheets, mattress toppers designed to promote airflow, cooling blankets, blackout curtains and temperature-regulating pajamas, which can all contribute to a more comfortable sleep environment.
